Summer is here and the heat is scorching at its best. We still cannot do away with our daily regime of going out and coming In. Summer brings in a new set of problems for your feet and hands. When outdoor temperatures are soaring and your feet are enclosed in tight shoes, it makes them susceptible to a variety of infections – psoriasis, blisters, fungal infections and smelly feet. Your arms and legs are directly exposed to harmful UV rays of the sun causing tanning and rashes.

ARMS

Apply A Sunscreen:  If you are planning to wear dresses or tops, always remember to apply a sunscreen with SPF 30+ before you step out in the sun. This will help you avoid those red rashes on your arms due to the dreadful heat.

Use a Lightweight Moisturizer: During the evenings, apply a lightweight moisturizer with mint and coconut milk extracts. Keep fungal infections, the accumulation of dirt and bacteria away by using an anti-bacterial soap to wash your armpits. Before going out, remember to keep a deodorant at hand. The application of a mint based moisturizer will cool the skin and keep it refreshed for the entire day.

Take Care of Your Elbows: Most of us neglect our elbows and so they remain darker compared to the other parts of our body. Scrub your elbows at least twice in a week to get rid of the dead tissues. It is advised to rub a slice of lemon every alternate day to your elbows to keep them clean and fair. Alternately, you can use mustard oil or coconut oil and lime.

FEET

Soak your Feet in Lukewarm Water

Water: Soak your feet regularly in lukewarm water to ease the tiredness and get rid of the dust and pollution.

Sun Protect: Before stepping out in the sun, make sure you have applied a generous amount of sunscreen on your feet as well.

Use a Foot powder: Foot powders are the best way to soak up excessive moisture during the hot months. A lightly scented powder will help you stay refreshed the entire day and ease you from the trouble of ‘smelly feet’

Go for a Pedicure: Head in for a foot massage once every week. This will keep your foot clean. Trim your toe nails to avoid dirt and dust from accumulating under your toe nails.

HANDS

Wear Gloves: Due to the harmful rays of the sun, it is important to keep your hands moisturized for the entire day to avoid wrinkles and calluses. Whenever, you are going out in the sun, wear gloves to protect them from the heat outside.

Protect them from the Sun: Use a sunscreen before you go out in the mornings and afternoons. Use a hand scrub to remove the dead skin from your hands at least once a week.

Use a Hand Cream: Use a rich moisturizing hand cream containing emollient plant oils and anti-inflammatory ingredients to pamper your hands, nails and cuticles.

KNEES

Give a break to your Denims and Jeans this summer and opt for skirts and dresses for girls and loose comfortable pants for boys. But, make sure you keep your knees spotless and clean.

Exfoliate: Exfoliate is a must. To keep your knees soft and smooth, be sure to make exfoliation a part of your daily skin care routine. When you go for a shower, make sure to clean the area around your knees with a pumice stone to get rid of dead skin and dirt.

Skin Lightning: Your knees tend to get dark every day due to exposure to the sun and the accumulation of dirt. Slice a lemon in half and rub it on your knees before you shower. Lemon contains citric acid which acts as a natural lightener and exfoliator.

We have leapt into another year where in the new budget was made on 16th March, 2012. The new budget made by our Finance Minister has ‘Unified’ the genders and made a general budget for all.

Taxes

During the budget time we always expect that the tax slab could be exempted to the higher numbers set than the before and that has been happening all these years. But, surely not to that extent that one could breathe free of taxes.

The New ‘Central Budget’ has brought in few changes as established below for General and Senior Citizens.

As you can see the First slab has been raised from 1.8 Lakh to 2 Lakh. This leads to a maximum tax savings of Rs. 2000 in this slab. The most beneficiaries are the one who are between 8 Lakh to 10 Lakh bracket with overall maximum tax savings of Rs. 20,000.

saving and spending

Now, it is time to plan your savings for this financial year 2012-13. So, what you waiting for? Just calculate your savings and investments or get in touch with your Finance Advisor.

Open Office – Easier To Convert Files To PDF

2012 February 28

Do you want to convert any of the MS office files to PDF? Before that let’s understand what PDF stands for. PDF stands for ‘Portable Document Format’ (Adobe Acrobat). PDF’s are used vastly in this generation as this helps in non-edition (easily) and file size that can be sent via emails at a very fast pace. Many Companies are opting for storage of vital information in PDF forms on their servers. Few companies also inculcate the use of PDF in their IT Security policies. But, now I am not talking to you about companies but let’s see how we (you and me) use these PDF formats and what we have been overlooking.

Adobe Reader X computer icon

I have come across many of my colleagues and many personal friends who have several document formats using MS OFFICE which, they are unable to convert it to PDF format. The several document formats I am talking about are the following, only dealing with Microsoft.

-          MS Excel (.xls, .xlsx)

-          MS Word (.doc, .docx)

-          MS Power Point (.ppt)

Many of my colleagues and friends go online and download the very enormously available converters and multi converters. These converters come in help if you are going to use those converters for a short period of time. That’s because the converters downloaded free from internet is always or almost always with free trial period. This means the product (converter software) you have downloaded will be handy only for few days or only for a few operations.

There is an easy way that I have come across by using other similar Application such as MS Office. To use this would be a little hindrance once you have used the regular application of Microsoft. But, nevertheless, this also provides handy solutions and usage when regularized every now and then.

‘Open Office’, this application is similar to MS Office application and can be downloaded from http://www.openoffice.org/download/ for free, I am sure many will try with me again. The downloadable file size is 151MB. This can be saved on your hard drive/disk and then ‘RUN’ to install this software application.

There is a little difference in the application soft ware. Once you have installed and ready use this application, you need to click on the open office icon and you will be prompted for various kinds of application to open. To choose an application resembling MS Word (.doc) please choose ‘Open Office – Writer’ application. This will open an application similar to MS word, please refer the sample figure below.

Once you have this application open for ‘Open Office’ there are two things that you can do with it, to convert the data in PDF format which is our goal (to learn) at present.

-          You can copy data from an existing Word document (.doc) and paste it here to use it as Open Office document. OR

-          You can right away enter data that you need to use in conversion of this data into PDF

For now let me take it as the first option that is, you are copying data available in ‘MS word doc’ to ‘Open Office doc’ then once you are ready and completed the whole set of arrangements and collation of data. Then, click <File Menu> in the <File Menu> option there is an option <Create PDF> or <Convert PDF). There will be a pop up menu asking the file name to save and path it has to be saved. You can provide the required information and save the PDF file.

Now, that we have created the PDF file, select the file from the folder/disk it has been saved and open the file for your further usage (Open with Adobe Acrobat). Please note that you need to have (Adobe Acrobat) installed in your computer prior to this. You can however, download it for free from http://filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/8756/ you can download (Acrobat Reader / Adobe Acrobat).

Why I prefer Open Office application is that this is as simple to MS Applications that we have been using for some time now. Also there is no ‘Trial Period’ of stuff like that in keeping Open Office in your computer or laptop. The same steps apply to other documents such as MS Excel, MS Power Point. There are similar kinds of applications or programs available in ‘Open Office’ that takes the same procedure to convert a MS application file into PDF file.

Friends, In case you feel there is a better and easier way to convert other type of docs into PDF then, please do not wait a second and share your inputs / exceptions below. Till then, just try this out and may be this works out better than hundreds and thousands of options available.

Woman – A journey of life in an auto rickshaw

On 24th Feb 2012, I and my Wife were waiting for an auto rickshaw at Banaswadi to go towards the Utility Building in Bangalore. Many auto rickshaws passed by and none were available empty and were pre-occupied by other local citizens.

English: Front wheel assembly from a typical a...

Finally a fast moving auto rickshaw approached our way and to my and my wife’s surprise the driver of the auto rickshaw was a lady with a long hair just below her shoulders neatly platted. The normal and regular dress code of auto is the Khaki shirt and pants that one would and is advised to wear as an auto rickshaw driver. She was indeed in the same uniform of male auto rickshaw drivers. Many a times I have noticed that few male auto rickshaw drivers do not follow the local rules applied of wearing the uniform for auto drivers.

With a smile on her face she asked my wife, “Where do you want to go?” to that my wife replied in the local language which is Kannada in Bangalore saying, “to the Utility building” She asked back “You want me to drive slowly, right?” This question was answered with a little grin as “YES”. The positive answer had been for a reason because my wife was carrying (a child with in her) and that would make us a little comfortable with the drive.

As usual, the Lady driver turned her meter or the other way to say it is put down the meter which initiates its countdown at the cost or fare that it would charge by the time we reach our destination. It was an electronic meter which started off with the minimum rate or charge of Rs. 17. The auto took off smoothly and the Lady driver was very keen that she does not bump here and there as the roads in Bangalore are tough to have a smoother ride, well we all know that.

Auto Rickshaw in Bangalore, with the Vidhana S...

Slowly but, steadily we reached near Ulsoor lake or the RBNMS ground road. Then I could not hold back to ask her which was running back in my mind to ask, “Since when are you driving auto rickshaw?” To this she immediately answered, “13 years sir” my next question was to ask her “How many lady drivers are driving auto rickshaws in Bangalore?” to which without hesitating she answered “12 Lady drivers in Bangalore” I had many questions to ask but, as we were almost reaching our destination I could not afford to waste our time or to divert her (Lady driver) concentration. I would honestly say that I, was a bit scared about the driving credentials of an auto rickshaw by a woman. After I reached the destination and we (me and my wife) got down from the auto rickshaw that is when I realized nothing was wrong in a woman driving an auto rickshaw and the most important thing was that the commuters in this auto in few minutes had reached their destination and were safe enough, as safe enough as it would have been with the other male auto rickshaw drivers. We paid the charges as per the meter and to be honest a little more than the meter as a tip for the smooth ride to our destination.

The Lady Driver of this auto rickshaw was about 35 years. I am not good at guessing ages just by looking at anybody. There was no difference in the ‘Woman auto rickshaw driver’ to all the attention she was receiving throughout our journey en-route to our destination. She would just wave her hands at all turns and signals as per the road rules established. Shows overtake signals to other fellow auto rickshaw drivers (as she had to drive the auto rickshaw a little slow for us). All hand signals and road rules followed exactly that were taught in the RTO office when we approach for a ‘Learner’s License’ or ‘Driving License’

I am glad that there are 12 Woman auto rickshaw drivers in Bangalore, India, who have or would have opted for this profession. However, What I understand here is that nothing is different for Men and Women.  They just need to make choices in their lives. 13 years of her experience could also make much better auto rickshaw drivers than the new men auto rickshaw drivers that are taking in this profession.

This was the first time both of us (Me and my wife) had experienced a smooth, safe and surprising journey by an auto rickshaw driven by a Woman. And, we are happy that we did travel in a ‘Woman driving an auto rickshaw’.

How To Make A Lumia Box

What is a Lumia Box?

Drawing of a Camera obscura box

Lumia Box

A lumia box is also known as a “camera obscura”. The words camera obscura mean “dark room” in Latin. Some camera obscuras are really the size of a room; you actually get inside, and look at images on the wall coming from either a hole or a lens on the opposite side of the room.
I call this project a lumia box because the purpose is not simply to look at images of the world, but to create unusual images of pure light. “Lumia” historically are kinetic-art sculptures that create patterns of moving, vibrant color. This simple box makes that possible.
How to make a Lumia Box?

A cardboard box and some tissue paper make up the lumia box. A box that is fairly short and wide is best. The ideal dimensions are 9 by 9 by 4 inches, but you can vary these according to what you have available. The kind of box that has a slip-on lid is preferred, but this, too is only an ideal.

Basically, you want one end of the box to have a cutout in it over which you will place apertures, and the other end you will fit with a tissue paper screen. You will also need:

  • Several pieces of aluminum foil that you can cut apertures (holes) of various shapes into;
  • A box cutter knife;
  • An X-acto knife or scissors;
  • Black construction paper or aluminium foil;
  • Masking tape.

Assembly of the lumia box is easy. Remove the flaps if you are using the kind of box that closes with flaps. Close the flaps on the other end of the box and seal with tape. Cut an opening about two inches square into the center of the closed end of the box.

Now you have a box that is completely open at one end, and has a two-inch square aperture at the other end. Tape the tissue paper over the open end of the box. Now your lumia box is ready to accept apertures.

English: An artist drawing from life with an 1...

Using a sharp knife, such as an X-acto knife, cut patterns into pieces of foil. Try to keep the features small. If this is beyond your skill, try using thin black construction paper for your apertures. Then you can use scissors to cut openings into them.

Install one of the apertures onto the lumia box. Hold the box with the screen toward you and point it at a point light source. You should see the aperture projected onto the screen. If you have access to a string of Christmas tree lights, or a tree that is decorated with these lights, try looking at the lights with your lumia box. Bring the box right up to the lights for the best 3-D effect.

Facebook Video Calling – How to get started

In my previous post about video calling on facebook (fb) in hands with Skype was determined to make waves. Now, that this has launched good and feels great to be a part of this I have noticed that most of us are still unaware of the basic facts about this new feature available in Facebook.

I have been storming earlier on the very minute questions regarding the start up and usage of the feature Video calling on facebook. We can have a quick look at this small time questions (I call this small time questions because once you have started using this feature then you need not go back to this post). Its easy.

What is video calling?

Video calling makes it possible for you and your friend to talk face to face. You just need to do is complete a quick, one-time setup. Once this is done you are ready to call any friend on your friends list of Facebook. The other thing is that, if your friend is not online then, you can still leave him/her a video message. Isn’t this spectacular than the older version of voice message used on your mobile phones.

How it works:

What you and your friend need is webcams and microphones setup to your laptop or comp. By this you will be able to see as well as hear each other in real time. By any chance one of your friends does not have a webcam then, they will be able to see and hear you and you will only be able to hear him/her.

Call Records:

Whenever you make a call the details of the call details (time and date) is listed in your ongoing message history with each friend. However, the calls are not recorded or saved by themselves.

Multi-tasking:

While video chatting you are allowed to use other features of facebook simultaneously.

To call a friend:

  1. Click the VIDEO button at the top of their profile (timeline) and then click Call.
  2. Click the Set Up button and follow the instructions for how to set up video calling on your browser.

Once you’ve successfully completed the setup, the call you’ve started with your friend should connect automatically. If it doesn’t, you can call again.

Browsers that support:

Video calling works best with the latest versions of the following browsers:

Mozilla Firefox

Google Chrome

Internet Explorer

Safari

Note that video calling for Linux is not currently supported. You will need to use one of these browsers in a Mac or Windows operating system. If you’re having trouble with video calling, try upgrading or switching your browser using the links above.

How do I start a video call with a friend?

After you complete the quick, one-time setup, you’re ready to make your first call:

  1. Visit your friend’s profile (timeline) and click the VIDEO button in the top right corner. If you and your friend are already chatting, you can also click the video icon at the top of your chat window.
  2. When your friend answers, you may have to wait a moment for your call to connect before the video call begins. If your friend hasn’t set up video calling yet, you’ll be asked to wait until the setup is complete.
  3. If your friend is unavailable, you can leave a video message. The time and date of your missed call will be listed in your ongoing message history with your friend.

Having trouble? Make sure your webcam and microphone are both up and running, then try again.

How do I know if a friend is available to take my call?

You can see if a friend is available by entering their name at the bottom of the chat list on the right side of the page. Friends that appear online in chat are also available for video calls. A green dot next to a friend’s name means they’re online and a moon icon means they’re online but inactive.

How do I end a video call?

To end a video call, just close the video window.

Indian Government Charges Google, Facebook and Others

For the first time, Indian prosecutors are taking Google, Yahoo, Facebook and other networking sites to court for refusing to remove material considered insulting to Indian leaders and major religious figures.

Social Networking

Government officials are upset about material insulting to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, ruling Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi and major religious figures. Some illustrations have shown Singh and Gandhi in compromising positions and pigs running through Mecca, Islam’s holiest city.

On Friday, the federal government told a New Delhi court that there was sufficient material to proceed against 21 social networking sites for offences of “promoting enmity between classes and causing prejudice to national integration”, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.

The cases, which PTI said name companies including Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Microsoft, represent a new risk of doing business in the nation of more than 1 billion people, which is looking to technology to boost its economy and standard of living. The dispute highlights India’s difficulty in balancing the Internet culture of freewheeling discourse with its homegrown religious and political sensitivities.

Convictions could bring fines and up to five years’ imprisonment, through prosecutors have named only the companies involved rather than any executives. Metropolitan Magistrate Sudesh Kumar on Friday asked India’s External Affairs Ministry to serve summons to officials of foreign-based companies for court appearances March 13.

In December, Telecommunications Minister Kapil Sibal said he had spoken repeatedly with officials from major Internet companies over the past three months and asked them to come up with a voluntary framework to keep offensive material off the Internet. He said that the companies told him there was nothing they could do.

There was no immediate comment by the networking sites after Friday’s court proceedings.

However, Facebook said last month that it would remove content that “is hateful, threatening, incites violence or contains nudity.”

Google said in a December statement that it removes content that violates local law and its own standards.
